Many commentaries discuss the building of the mishkan as "Plan B", as opposed to the original plan of Hashem appearing in any place where He is called. Bnei Yisroel could not handle the abstraction, and needed a tangible expression of the presence of Hashem on this earth. Betzalel understood that this is what the mishkan needed to accomplish-focused heavenward, but created in the way of the world to bring the presence of Hashem to us. This idea is expressed in Bnei Yisroel's war against Amalek, when they looked toward Moshe's hands extended heavenward. When they looked up, they were connecting to the abstract to bring Hashem's presence down here, leading to victory over Amalek, who
believes that one can only accomplish on this earth.
